Spotted Gar (Lepisosteus oculatus) is a North American species of freshwater fish that belongs to the Gar family. These fish prefer to inhabit shallow creeks, rivers, and lakes with clear, slow-moving waters, but can sometimes be found in brackish or more salty waters. Spotted Gar have olive-colored, dart-shaped bodies with thick, bony scales that are covered in numerous dark spots and elongated mouths with sharp, needle-like teeth. These fish are the smallest of all the Gar species found on the continent, growing to a average weight of about 1.8-2.7 kg (4-6 lb) and reaching a maximum weight rarely over 4.4 kg (9 lb). The diet of Spotted Gar consist primarily of crustaceans and other fish.
