Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) is typically found in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic Ocean and primarily inhabit the warmer coastal waters in the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, and the West Indies. The official state saltwater fish of Alabama, the Tarpon can be found in coastal waters, estuaries, lagoons, and rivers. Tarpon is also known as the Silver King due its majestically looking elongated body covered in shiny scales that are greenish-bluish on top and silver on the sides. The Atlantic Tarpon usually grows up to 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) in length and weights up to 161 kg (355 lb). This fish’s diet consists primarily of small schooling fish and crustaceans.
