In late summer and early fall the most productive fishing time is around late morning and early evening, when the sun is high enough.

On days like this fish tend to be very active all morning starting from the very early hours. But as the sun rises higher, fishing productivity drops.

Late evening is the best time for fishing in this weather. Keep in mind that twilight is considered the best time for going after a range of fish species, such as Crappie, Channel Catfish, Walleye and many others.

Starting points

The Foggy Sanctuary

The Foggy Sanctuary

This lovely area is located right at the mouth of San Joaquin River, where its waters flow into Saint-Anne Bay. A series of old wooden docks on one of the river's many channels is a marvelous place for sport fishing - a serenely lonesome and quiet location gives you that "edge of the world" feeling. The atmosphere is indeed enchanting, with the dense mystic fog often covering the area. Among the thickets of dark-green reeds, these weedy waters house abundant Striped Bass. Not to mention White Crappie or Redear Sunfish, that you can catch in this desolate no-man's land with nothing to disturb your silent pastime but the enchanting sounds of nature.

Below the Cryton Dam

Below the Cryton Dam

The California Delta, being a major migration path for Chinook Salmon travelling to and from the Pacific ocean is an overall marvelous fishing location. But one of the best places to fish here is perhaps this spot on the San Joaquin River right below the Cryton Dam. Here, the otherwise whitewater tributary turns into a flat valley river with occasional riffles and shallow areas with crowded weeds and rocky constructions. So either get comfortable on the pebbly steep shore or put on your wader boots and step into the cool almost clear waters as you master the current and spend the day angling away. You may also try to hook fish like Steelhead and rejoice to the refreshing crisp sound of this man-made Cryton Dam waterfall, rumbling in a sapphire downpour, as if connecting the grey waters of San Joaquin to the deep blue sky.

Fishing the Beaver

Fishing the Beaver

Welcome to Beaver Island, a small desolate spec of land in the vast San Joaquin River, overlooking the Cryton Dam and a lovely settlement of stilt houses that rests along the flooded banks of Sacramento River close to its estuary. This wide watershed area with marshy flooded shores is scenically contoured by a green landscape that is full of life and a hint of local coloring. This secluded location is among the best places for Common Carp fishing, not to mention that the Beaver Island has other countless fish species for you to hook: Striped Bass, Bluegill, Redear Sunfish are just to name a few.

Southern Docks

Southern Docks

In the southwestern part of San Joaquin Delta you can find another lovely fishing spot with heartwarming wooden docks that offer a beautiful view of Beaver Island right across. Magnificent in its serenity, this enchanting place bedazzles with its clear summer skies, peacefully reflecting in the water’s mirrory surface. Just the spot to indulge in rejuvenating angling meditations with your favorite rod in hand, as you outsmart underwater adversaries like Common Carp, Striped Bass, Bluegill or Redear Sunfish.
