Description
Rock Bass (Ambloplites Rupestris) is a freshwater fish species of the Sunfish family native to the Great Lakes system, the upper and middle Mississippi River basin and east-central North America. As this fish’s name suggests, Rock Bass prefer to stay near rocky shorelines. Similar in appearance to Smallmouth Bass, the Rock Bass is usually smaller. Identifying characteristics of these fish are their red eyes and rows of dark dots on their sides. The average Rock Bass is between 15 and 25 cm (6 to 10 in) in length, and they rarely weigh over 0.5 kg (1 lb). The maximum recorded weight of a Rock Bass was 1.4 kg (3.0 lb). Rock Bass are carnivorous, their diet mainly consisting of smaller fish, minnows, worms, insects, and crustaceans.
