Description
European Eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a critically endangered species of Eel that can be found in the basins of Baltic Sea as well as throughout Eastern Europe. While it usually prefers to stay in still waters, the European Eel can sometimes be found in fast current and at various depths. The Eel is brownish-green in color and has a long, slippery, cylindrical body with small scales that gets a bit flat on the sides closer to the tail. Its snake-like body even enables it to travel on land, moving through wet grass from one waterway to another. This fish is normally around 60–120 cm (2 – 4 ft) long, with a weight of 1.5 - 3 kg (3 - 6.5 lb). But unique specimen can sometimes grow to be 2 m (6.5 ft) long and weigh up to 5 kg (11 lb). These predatory fish feed predominantly on insect larvae, mollusca, frogs and small fish.
